Today's Karlovac was built on mediaeval fortress which was intended as a shield to defend the area from Osmanli's invasions to Middle Europe. Karlovac was founded on 13.July 1579. it was designed as a regular hexagon with triangular bastions which form a six pointed star. Parts of this fortified settlement can be still seen in the centre of the old part of town. Since it was founded, Karlovac became and grow into one of the most important transit junctions in Croatia. This is in the first place because of its very good geostrategic position. It is situated in the western part of the country in the valley where the rivers Kupa, Korana, Mrežnica and Dobra cross. Many tourists come and visit Karlovac every year. They are attracted with four beautiful clean rivers and their tributaries, many sport and recreation activities, historic and cultural monuments, hunting and fishing and many other attractiv sites in the county.
