The Museum of the Homeland War - Turanj
|
In the place where old Austrian barracks called "Turanj" used to be, in the South part of the town of Karlovac by the river of Korana on the old Pitvice road D-1, there are 15 three-dimensional items of combat technique and 5 kinds of fortifications on display. It is only a slight part of the armaments with which the Croatian Army used during the Homeland War from 1991 to 1995.
There used to be the front line during the war on Turanj in Karlovac, on these rivers. Today's history of the town of Karlovac and of the free and independent Republic of Croatia was being written over here. Turanj and its old, during bombshell fire destroyed buildings; tell a story about patriotism and a warrior, a little man and his dream of free and independent Croatia.
Here at the flow (sutok) of the rivers of Korana and Mrežnica, the Austrian Monarchy authorities built a constabulary fortification as a pre- defence of the Karlovac fort in 1580. Here in Turanj there used to be the guard of Vojna Krajina placed, which would only at the end of the war for freedom in 1699 be transferred to the fort of the town of Slunj.
The history repeated itself here again. During the Homeland War, there showed up invaders from the East on Turanj once again. The line of fire was placed 600 - 700 meters to the South. It was here that the entrance in the town of Karlovac was blocked for the invader. There is place more appropriate than this one for a museum of military history of the city and the history of the Homeland War.
The Museum collection of the armament in the Homeland War placed in the space f the old Austrian barracks of "Turanj" will represent the memories on people who sacrificed their lives to defend the homeland, who have defended out town with their will and courage just like the soldiers in the Homeland War of the Republic of Croatia.
